What does DOP mean?

What does DOP mean?

If you have ever browsed the grocery store and come across a product with the letters D.O.P printed on it, you may have wondered what that means and what is so special about it.

What does DOP stand for?

DOP stands for Denominazione d' Origine Protetta ("Protected Designation Of Origin"). This distinction is regulated by Italy and other European countries to protect products produced in certain regions. These products are highly regulated to ensure that the high quality of the products produced is maintained in the specific regions they are being produced. Products such as San Marzano tomatoes can be protected under this seal from other brands that do not go through the same strict guidelines of production.

How can you tell if San Marzano tomatoes are real?

Consumers can ensure their purchase of San Marzano tomatoes is authentic and of the highest quality with the DOP seal. Real San Marzano tomatoes also are only to be sold in a can whole, or cut in half. The other seal to ensure they were grown in the designated region is the "Pomodoro San Marzano dell’Agro Sarnese Nocerino" seal which shows that the product was certified by the Consortium of San Marzano.
